When you subscribe to an IPTV service like IPTV Nords, you receive either an M3U URL or Xtream Codes credentials. If you are new to IPTV, these terms can be confusing. This guide explains exactly what M3U is, how it works, and when to use it versus Xtream Codes.

What Is M3U?

M3U is a plain text file format that contains a list of media files or streaming URLs. The name stands for MP3 URL though it is now used almost universally for IPTV channel lists.

An M3U file looks something like this:

  • Line 1: a header line that tells the player this is an extended M3U file
  • Line 2: channel information (name, logo, group category)
  • Line 3: the stream URL for that channel
  • These three lines repeat for every channel in the list

An M3U playlist with 19,000 channels is therefore a very long text file with approximately 57,000 lines. Your IPTV app reads this file and presents all the channels in a nice interface so you never have to look at the raw file yourself.

What Is an M3U URL?

Rather than downloading the M3U file and loading it manually, IPTV providers give you an M3U URL — a web address that generates the M3U file on demand when your IPTV app requests it.

This is better for several reasons:

  • The channel list is always up to date — when new channels are added you do not need to do anything
  • Your app simply refreshes the URL to get the latest version
  • The URL contains your account credentials so it only works for your subscription

Keep your M3U URL private. Your M3U URL is unique to your account and contains your credentials. Sharing it with others is a violation of the terms of service and may result in your account being suspended.

M3U vs Xtream Codes — What Is the Difference?

Xtream Codes is a more advanced login method that uses a Username, Password and Server URL instead of a single long M3U URL. Here is how they compare:

  • M3U URL — simpler, works with almost every IPTV app including basic ones, slightly slower to load on large channel lists
  • Xtream Codes — faster loading, supports catch-up TV and VOD categories better, required for some advanced features in TiviMate and Smarters

IPTV Nords provides both. If your app supports Xtream Codes login we recommend using that. If your app only supports M3U, use your M3U URL — the channel list is identical.

How to Use Your M3U URL

Your M3U URL was sent in your IPTV Nords welcome email. To use it:

  1. Open your IPTV app (TiviMate, Smarters Pro, GSE, VLC, etc.)
  2. Find the option to add a new playlist or source
  3. Select M3U URL or Remote URL
  4. Paste your M3U URL exactly as it appears in the email
  5. Give the playlist a name (e.g. IPTV Nords)
  6. Tap Add or Save and wait for channels to load

Loading time: A playlist with 19,000 channels takes 15–60 seconds to load for the first time. After that your app caches the list locally and subsequent loads are much faster.

Can I Open an M3U in VLC?

Yes — VLC Media Player on Windows, Mac and mobile devices can open M3U playlists. Go to Media → Open Network Stream and paste your M3U URL. VLC will load all channels as a playlist. However VLC lacks the EPG, catch-up TV and interface features of dedicated IPTV apps so we recommend using it only as a backup option.

What If My M3U URL Stops Working?

If your M3U URL stops working it is almost always one of these reasons:

  • Your subscription has expired — renew it on the renewal page
  • The URL was copied incorrectly — check for missing characters or extra spaces
  • A temporary server issue — wait 5 minutes and try again

If none of these apply, contact our live chat support and we will check your account and send you a fresh URL immediately.
